New York Memorial Weekend Events

Here's some fun NY events this weekend!
American Revolution Walking Tours -- Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend with a walking tour of Lower Manhattan's patriotic history and a trek across the Brooklyn Bridge to discuss the layout of the Battle of Brooklyn, fought in 1776. NYC Discovery Walking Tours will lead the way on both Saturday and Sunday at 3:30 PM and admission is $18 per person. Call 212-465-3331 for reservations and meeting place.

It's Fleet Week in New York City from May 23-30, 2012! That means the big ships and lots of sailors in uniform are visiting Manhattan.
Fleet Week is America’s premier tribute and “thank you” to the men and women who serve in the armed forces. This year's New York Fleet Week celebrates the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the festivities will include a movie premiere and a Grucci fireworks display.
  • Friday, May 25:
  • Celebrate U.S. Marine Corps Day in Battery Park from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. At the Intrepid, enjoy a Fleet Week Broadway showcase with performances by stars of shows including Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Rock of Ages, and Sister Act from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM.
    At 7:30 PM, the Intrepid Summer Movie Series kicks off its series of free public film screenings on the flight deck with a screening of Top Gun. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Saturday, May 26:
    Take an island cruise. Visit Governors Island for the Governors Island Family Fest or head to Staten Island for the Staten Island Music Festival.
    At the Intrepid, cheer on visiting members of the Armed Forces as they compete in tug of war tournament from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM on Pier 86. Then, see Sesame Street Muppets Elmo, Rosita and Gordon perform live at 12:15 PM.
  • Sunday, May 27:Hear military bands play in Times Square from 2:00-5:00 PM.
    At the Intrepid, enjoy an afternoon of live music by Travis and the Longhorns, Sistas, and George Gee Swing Orchestra. 
  • Monday, May 28: Memorial Day commemoration ceremony will take place on the Intrepid from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM. The service will include the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag on Intrepid’s flight deck, the playing of Taps, a ceremonial wreath laying, 3-volley rifle salute and a military flyover. Free with price of admission to the museum
Cloisters Family Festival -- Enjoy a medieval weekend uptown at the Cloisters Museum. Participate in craft projects, go on an art hunt, tour the museum galleries and garden with the family, and much more.

New York Philharmonic Memorial Day Concert -- See conductor Alan Gilbert lead this free concert at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Seating is first-come, first-served. Music will also be piped out onto the Cathedral's Pulpit Green, weather permitting.

Memorial Day Weekend Street Fairs -- Spending the long weekend in the city? Check out some of the great street fairs and festivals -- including the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit and festivals on the Upper West Side and in Times Square.
